Brainard Rivet Company is seeking a mechanically inclined individual to set up and operate a variety of Index drilling machines and thread rollers, as well as shaving and grooving machines.

The successful candidate will run multiple machines at the same time and ensure that the parts produced at each machine adhere to all specifications designated on blueprints. They will clean, maintain and dress up tooling needed by the equipment they operate. They will also trouble shoot and fix problems that occur when setting up jobs as well as partner effectively with Engineering to alter tooling designs in order to improve efficiency.

This role offers opportunities for development and advancement. Brainard’s training program provides individualized plans to impart skills needed to operate more complex equipment.

Job Description

  • Set-up and operate a variety of Index drilling machines, including thread rollers and Towa shaving and grooving machines.
  • Run multiple machines at the same time.
  • Reads and refers to blueprints for set-ups and part specifications.
  • Responsible for the quality of parts produced using SPC to document that parts are manufactured to blueprint tolerances.
  • Checks visual quality of parts along with using micrometers, calipers, optical comparator, dial indicator gages, depth gages, plug gages, no/go gages in the inspection of formed parts.
  • Operates Data Collection System (SPC Documentation).
  • Clean and maintain tooling in good condition and keep tooling organized and in proper places.
  • Dresses up tooling when minor adjustments are needed.
  • Recognizes and takes appropriate measures to ensure proper processing of nonconforming products.
  • Fills out all required forms and reports pertaining to SPC.
  • Responsible for general housekeeping of work area. Maintains safe working conditions and conducts oneself in such a manner as not to endanger oneself or other employees.
  • Responsible for keeping floor manager informed on all work-related problems and the progress of all work assignments.
  • Mechanically inclined individuals who can work alone but also works well as a team player.
  • Must have the ability to trouble shoot and fix problems that occur when setting up jobs, working with engineering to make any tooling design changes to make the part run more efficient.

A successful Brainard Rivet machinist sets up, operates and maintains shop equipment such as lathes, milling machines, grinders, drill presses and powered hand tools. They accurately interpret blueprints in their efforts to produce high quality tooling for manufacturing purposes. They keep their shared workspace neat and organized for maximum tool-life and efficiency.

Job Description:

  • Program, set up, operate, and maintain shop equipment such as lathes, milling machines, grinders, drill presses, and powered hand tools.
  • Perform tool package checks for new orders
  • Read Blueprints/Mylars, Work Instructions, and Work Procedures to make tooling in accordance with specifications required
  • Make equipment & building repairs as needed. Able to diagnosis and solve mechanical and electrical problems.
  • Verify tooling dimensions and check in purchased tooling using various measuring devices (Calipers, Micrometers, Scales, Comparator etc…)
  • Put tooling packages together
  • Make tooling to part specifications using lathes, milling machines, surface grinders etc…
  • Perform Preventative Maintenance on Manufacturing Equipment (This includes both mechanical and electrical maintenance)
  • Provide tool crib coverage, maintaining tooling inventories

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Minimum 1 year of manual machining experience is required (5 years preferred)
    • Manual lathes, milling machines, grinders, drill presses, powered hand tools
  • Machine, vehicle and/or building maintenance experience preferred but not required
  • Vocational Training, Apprenticeship or Technical Degree preferred
  • 3-5 years of similar or related work experience is preferred but not required
  • Genuine mechanical aptitude
  • Manual dexterity, accuracy and attention to detail
  • Tool & die experience is preferred
  • Ability to use precision tools to take accurate measurements
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics and manuals
  • Knowledge of metal properties preferred
