What is a shoulder rivet?

As its name suggests, this rivet has a “shoulder,” or expanded section within the shank, which acts as a stop. Shoulder rivets are widely used across industries for their precision and reliability in applications. They can be manufactured with a variety of designs, depending on the end user’s application. Most commonly, they are used to provide precise spacing or as a hinging/pivoting joint as the shoulder can act as a bearing surface. Shoulder rivets are installed by upsetting the smallest diameter part of the shank.  This upsetting or deformation essentially creates a second head which fixes the part in place, often in an assembly base, leaving the shoulder or thicker part of the shank free to meet its function. In comparison to threaded fasteners which are also used in many of the same applications, shoulder rivets are inexpensive and ideal for high-speed assembly.

Bins of shoulder rivetsWhat are the advantages of shoulder rivets?

  • Precision: The tight tolerance of the shoulder diameter ensures accurate spacing and alignment
  • Durability: Made from high-strength materials, these rivets can withstand significant wear and tear
  • Versatility: Available in a wide range of sizes and materials to suit various applications
  • Ease of Use: The distinct shoulder provides a straightforward means of achieving consistent results in assembly
  • Design:  Many shoulder rivets can be engineered with dimensions that allow for cold-forming which afford cost savings due to minimal scrap and high-speed production
  • Security: Because they are unable to be removed without breaking one of the heads
