What is a special fastener?
Special fasteners are designed for a specific purpose or application, often in critical situations where safety and reliability are crucial. These fasteners are typically custom to the project that a customer is working on. Customers may require small changes to a standard fastener to meet the need of their application. These small changes translate into a requirement for a “special” fastener. Brainard Rivet is well-equipped to help with these needs.
Special fasteners are considered a precision cold formed part. Brainard Rivet manufactures a wide variety of custom or special fasteners, such as screws, bolts, nuts, weld products, etc. Using the cold forming process allows for precision and tight tolerances in the final product, while obtaining high volumes in relatively short periods of time. This style of manufacturing involves shaping metal at room temperature by applying pressure through dies. With only minimal material waste, fasteners with myriad unique features are produced rapidly with consistency.
Some features cold-formed custom parts can have:
- a straight tenon
- a semi-tubular tenon
- a tapered or pointed tenon
- a shoulder (or even multiple shoulders)
- a collar
- grooved or knurled shanks
- ornamental heads for cosmetic hardware
- various head stamps or markings for differentiation
- special heads, such as balls, cams or hexagonal configurations, etc.
- weld protrusions or weld rings on top of or under the head
- any special feature needed can be reviewed by engineering for feasibility
Mass-production of special fasteners can provide significant savings, compared to screw machined, cast or forged parts.
